Happy Earth Day! Today marks the 41st anniversary of Earth Day. Make sure you take a step outside to appreciate Mother Nature and give her a great big hug. We have so much to owe to our lovely planet and we want to help everyone celebrate in Zoo World too! Here’s a little history about Earth Day and we’ve added in a special surprise too, so make sure you keep on reading!
Wisconsin Senator, Gaylord Nelson, organized the very first Earth Day back in 1970. Senator Nelson wanted to rally the public and promote a walk-out from work and class to protest the country’s lack of environmental policies.
Many people assume the date of April 22 was chosen due to the change in season, but that’s not true! Senator Nelson simply wanted a day in the middle of the week to bring out the largest number of workers and students. That day would be a Wednesday. Back in 1970, April 22nd fell upon a Wednesday and simply put, the date worked for everyone. It is reported that 20 million people participated in that first Earth Day.
Fast forward a couple decades and this Earth Day movement has pushed for the passage of the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act and many more groundbreaking environmental laws. Currently, it has been reported more than 1 billion people participate in Earth Day each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world. Wow!
Now, here in Zoo World, we wanted to participate and show our love and devotion to the Earth too. Check out your shop to make your Zoo the greenest one around with all the latest ways to clean and recycle. Earth Day 2011 also marks the return of the very popular Earth Day Tree.
Shown here with the new rotating Earth Day sculpture, this player favorite tree will make its debut back in the shop tomorrow, Saturday, April 23rd, 2011.
